Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae that infect the inner lining of the urethra, cervix, rectum and throat or the whites of the eyes (conjunctiva).

Gonorrhea can spread through the bloodstream to other parts of the body, especially the skin and joints. In women, gonorrhea can rise to the genital tract and infect the lining of the pelvis causing pelvic pain and reproductive problems.

CAUSE

The bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

SYMPTOMS

In men, initial symptoms typically occur within 2-7 days after infection. The symptoms began as discomfort in the urethra, which a few hours later followed by pain when voiding and pus discharge from the penis. Patients often urinate and feel the urge to urinate, which got worse as the disease spread to the upper urethra. Hole penis looks red and swollen.

In women, early symptoms can occur within 7-21 days after infection. Female patients often do not show symptoms for several weeks or months, and this disease is known only after her sexual partner infected. If symptoms develop, usually mild. But some patients show severe symptoms, such as the urge to urinate, pain when urination, vaginal discharge and fever.

Infections can strike the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, urethra and rectum; causes pain in the pelvis or pain during sexual intercourse.
Pus can come out of the cervix, urethra or glands around the vaginal opening.

Women and homosexual men who have sex through the anus (rectal opening) can suffer from gonorrhea to the rectum. The patient felt uncomfortable around her anus and rectum out of the liquid. The area around the anus looks red and rough, stool covered by mucus and pus. On examination with anaskop will appear mucus and fluid in the rectal wall of patients.

Sexual intercourse by mouth (oral sex) with another person cause gonorrhea, gonorrhea of the throat (gonococcal pharyngitis). These infections usually cause no symptoms, but sometimes causes a sore throat and swallowing disorders. If the infected fluid in the eye then it could happen outside the eye infection (gonococcal conjunctivitis). Newborns can be infected by gonorrhea from her mother during the birth process, resulting in swelling of the eyelids and the eyes out pus. In adults, symptoms may occur together, but often only 1 eye is affected. If the infection is not treated blindness can occur.

COMPLICATIONS

Infection sometimes spreads through the bloodstream to 1 or a few joints, where the joints become swollen and very painful, so the movement becomes limited. Infection through the bloodstream can also cause red spots on the skin containing pus, fever, body discomfort or pain in several joints that move from one joint to other joints (arthritis-dermatitis syndrome).

Infection can occur heart (endocarditis). Wrap liver infection (perihepatitis) can cause pain that resembles gallbladder disorders. Complications that occur can be overcome and rarely fatal, but the cure for arthritis or endocarditis was slow.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis based on the results of microscopic examination of pus, which found the bacteria that causes gonorrhea. If the microscopic examination found no bacteria, then performed in the laboratory breeding. If the suspected infection of the throat or rectum, taken samples from this area and created cultures.

TREATMENT

Gonorrhea is usually treated with seftriakson single intramuscular injection (through the muscle) or by giving antibiotics by mouth (by mouth) for 1 week (usually given doksisiklin). If gonorrhea has spread through the bloodstream, patients are usually treated in the hospital and get antibiotics intravenously
